For some businesses picking out a domain name is either one of the easiest things to do or might be one of the toughest. This depends on whether an individual or business had already picked out your name and registered it. Here are some examples on how you can get around the issue of not being able to use your first choice in domain names:

1. Hyphenate your business name (www.my-business.com).
2. Abbreviate your domain name or parts of it if you are able to.
3. Pick another top-level domain (.net, .org, .us, etc.).

One other solution for getting the domain you really like and someone else has is either wait for the domain name to expire (if you can wait that long and if the registered owner isn’t using the domain) or you can try to contact the registrant to the domain you would like and make an offer. Please note that some domains can reach into thousands of dollars so if you are not prepared for the possibility to shell out some serious dough, this method might not be suited for you.

The great thing about domain names and businesses is that you pretty much open to all kinds of names that are not even discovered yet. Say you didn’t have a name for your business yet and you wanted to get into the seafood business. You can reach for your laptop, visit your favorite domain registrant and look up a cool name for your business (how about www.mauvelobster.com for example?). Doing it this way, picking out a domain name and business name can be lots of fun — And by the way, mauvelobster.com is not taken… yet!
